THE GREATEST GENERATION
It will be seventy years this December that the United States was forced to go to war when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Over 2,400 people died in one day. I was seven years old when that terrible event occurred. Even at that young age I can remember many of the trials and tribulations experienced during the war years. There were thousands upon thousands of men and women who gave their lives defending the freedom of the world. Tom Brokaw would call them the “Greatest Generation”. But sadly to the present college graduate this generation means nothing. Most of them know little or nothing about WWII.
The same problem is true in the church. In the early 1800’s one or two generations fought to establish New Testament Christianity in a free land. Each succeeding generation has cared less and less about the importance of what we believe. Each generation knows Christ less and less because they no longer know God’s Word.
A generation discovers Christ and labors with enthusiasm to make him known. The next generation or so uses the words but the enthusiasm is gone. The next generation repeats the words but no longer cares or understands what they mean. Finally the fourth generation no longer believes the words and the church dies. I fear that we are in the fourth generation now. I find more and more people who either do not know what the message is or what it means.
All we have to do to see the decline is to compare the membership numbers of congregations to their membership numbers 25 years ago. You will have some whose numbers are higher, but we then need to see how those number came to increase. Are their numbers higher because they have converted people to the Lord or have those numbers increased because members of other congregations have transferred their membership there? The only true church growth is achieved when sinners are taught the gospel and are converted to the Lord and their sins washed away by the blood of the Lamb. Growth achieved through transfer of membership is just swelling. The swelling of one congregation is made possible by the decline of another.
We are living in the day of “each man doing what is right in his own eyes.” The authority of God is no longer respected, even in the Lord’s church, as it once was. It seems that we have to cycle through these periods every so many years because people seem to get tired of doing as the Bible commands the people of God to live and worship. People get bored. We live in a world that wants excitement. The trouble is that what is exciting today is not as exciting in following days and we have to have a new fix to get excited about. All these things are of the devil because he wants us to be distracted from the really important things of life. If Christians cannot get excited about God and his ways, there is really no hope. The Greatest People on the earth today are God’s special people, his holy nation, the church. That is something to really get excited about.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
How do we know there are two parts in the waiting place for judgment?
In the New Testament there are two Greek words used for “hell.” Gehenna is the reference to eternal damnation used eleven times by the Lord and one time by James (3:6). The other word used for hell is Hades. The King James Version translates both words hell and causes some confusion as to the meaning of hell.
Hades has come to be seen as the “holding” place for the dead until the Judgment Day. This comes about because of the idea that everyone will come before the Lord in judgment and our final destiny will be decided on that day. We must realize that we are judged by the life we live here and now and our salvation or damnation will not depend on some court room scene after our death. The condition of our “spiritual man” at the time of our death determines our destiny in eternity.
This is clearly seen in the words of our Lord in Luke 16:19-31. The story of the rich man and Lazarus presents us with valuable lessons concerning our future. These two men lived different lifestyles while on earth, one very rich and one very sick and poor. They experienced that which makes all men equal on this earth – death! No matter how rich, poor, educated, uneducated, etc., at death all stand equal before God. While alive the rich man had everything while Lazarus had nothing. After death their roles were completely reversed. The rich man was in torment while Lazarus was in spiritual luxury, Abraham’s bosom. The rich man was in torment while Lazarus was comforted. The greatest lesson to be learned from this story is that their conditions after death could not be changed. They were where they would be throughout eternity. The lives they had lived while on earth determined their eternal destiny.
Upon his request for assistance from Lazarus, the rich man was told, “And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us” (Luke 16:26). FINALITY! THE CONDITION OF THE SOUL AT DEATH IS THE CONDITION OF THE SOUL FOR ETERNITY!
It is difficult for many to grasp the thought that there will be no case to plead at Judgment. If we are not ready when we die, we cannot get ready after we die.
There are those who believe that Hades no longer exists. They believe it was necessary up until the death of our Lord because those under the Old Law were waiting for Jesus to come and die for the pardon of their sins as well as those of us who live following his death, burial and resurrection. Once Jesus died and “validated” their faithfulness and their sins were forgiven they then went on to heaven and the lost to eternal hell. There is no way to prove or disprove this idea. They believe that when we die we immediately go to heaven or hell. But even if this is not true, it matters little. In Hades the rich man was in “torment” and Lazarus was “comforted.” And, their condition could not be changed.
What is the lesson we must learn? Now is the time to get ready. There is no second chance after this life is over!
