Lance’s Lines
Greetings to all, and welcome to the Northwest church on another Lord’s Day. To both those who are a part of the Northwest family, and our visitors today, we express our gratitude that you have chosen to worship and study here as we begin another new week.
Speaking of study, I want to share with you plans for a new Sunday morning Bible class that will begin on March 7th. This class will be specifically for younger adults, those in the 18-30 age range, married or single. We have a definite need for such a class, to address the concerns of those who are just beginning careers or families. This class will provide a setting to discuss biblical answers to the questions of life for our younger adults. John R. Oberlin has agreed to be the teacher for the class, and his idea of what the class should offer is a combination of biblical instruction and social fellowship. The goal, both during the class time and in activities outside the classroom setting, is to get younger adults together to share with one another and to help one another during this stage of their lives.
The new class will be meeting in the south end of the multi-purpose room starting that first Sunday in March, and adults in the age range mentioned earlier (give or take a few years) will be receiving a personal invitation to join the class on that day. Also, as young people “graduate” from the Senior high-age class this spring, this will be a natural place for them to go to continue their biblical education with people more contemporary to their own age.
This class can be great for those in the younger adult stage of their lives, and I know John will do well as its teacher. What we need is the support of those in this age category to come to the class and to be a part of making it a success, and a permanent fixture in our educational ministry.
Mark that date; March 7th. Note the location: multi-purpose room, south (kitchen) end. Pray for the success of the class, for John as its teacher, and for our education ministry as a whole.

To all those who serve as teachers, helpers and leaders in the Northwest church’s education ministry, let me say “thank you.” You all do such important work as part of the Northwest family and of the kingdom of God. We always have a need for more who are willing to accept the challenge of the teaching of God’s word. If you’d like to volunteer, let John R. Oberlin know.

One last item for now. Tomorrow evening at 7:15 there will be the opening assembly for the 2010 Christian Training School. All instructors and students will gather in the Northwest auditorium and then be dismissed to their individual classes. I do pray that you have registered, or will come and sign up for a class, for this year’s school. It’s not too late to do so. Then, be here at Northwest for the start of classes tomorrow evening.
Have a great day and week. God bless.

Who’s Your “Barnabas”? As a follow-up to comments made during a lesson last month, we want to have members of the Northwest family share with us the names of individuals who have been an encouragement to them in any way. Who is your “Barnabas”? Who has lifted you up in times of need, encouraged you when it was most beneficial to you, helped you through the circumstances of life? This may have been done by a well-timed note, or by some words of support and an attitude of caring, or in many other ways greater and smaller. Use the form provided in the foyer, and let us know whom you appreciate for their love and concern, and for their efforts to encourage you as Barnabas encouraged brethren in the early church. Fill out the form and give it to Theada Shepler, or simply place it in her office mailbox. We will highlight these “Barnabases” on the back of the pew sheet. One last note. For the time being, we’ll exclude the ministered staff, and focus on the other members of the congregation who are deserving of recognition.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
If people today are under the New Testament covenant, why do we spend so much time in studying the Old Testament? Should we spend so much time studying the Old Testament?
It is true that we today are under the New Testament covenant of grace and truth, but it is also necessary that we have knowledge of the Old Testament to really understand the New Testament. The Apostle Paul wrote “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Rom. 15:4). In 1 Cor. 10 Paul reminds the Christians of many of the mistakes and sins of the Israelites. In verse 11 Paul writes, “Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.” Question: how can I know the sins of the Israelites unless I study the Old Testament?
Truth of the matter is we cannot understand the New Testament unless we know a great deal about the Old Testament. For example, we would not know that we are a part of the human race if it were not for the Old Testament. Genesis 1:26-28 tells us that God made us (man) in his own image. How do we know that we are the human race and not one of the animal kingdoms? The very fact that we control animals and we are not controlled by someone else is proof that we are humans. God put man in charge. We have free will as God gave Adam and Eve. That we can think and reason, as no other part of God’s creation, proves we are human.
If it were not for the Old Testament we would not know what sin is and what it does to our relationship with God. We learn all this in the first three chapters of Genesis. The Old Testament gives us the story of God preparing the world for the arrival of his Son Jesus Christ to be the Savior of the world. We would never know this story if it were not for the Old Testament. There are over 300 prophecies of Christ in the Old Testament. Jesus stated in Matt. 5:17, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.”
For some reason most people do not like to study history. As a former history teacher, one of the greatest jobs I had was convincing the students that they needed to know these historical facts. Folks, you cannot know where you are unless you know where you came from. It is impossible to understand God’s scheme of redemption without knowing some of the history revealed in the Old Testament concerning God’s dealings with man throughout the centuries. We don’t live under the old covenant. The New Testament reveals to us God’s plan of salvation and how he wants us to live as his children. The Old Testament reveals how this salvation came into being.
