KEITH’S KULL

FACES OF JESUS

The writers of scripture were very careful not to give a physical description of Jesus.  Yet, I am sure that all of us have a mental picture of our Savior; and I am also sure that those mental pictures vary widely.  In fact that picture in our mind probably varies from time to time depending upon where we are in life.  What do you see when you picture the face of Jesus in your own mind?

            1. Do you see a face etched with compassion?  Our Savior was certainly a compassionate being.  Mark 1:40-42 records his compassionate healing of a leper.  What did His compassionate face look like to the leper?  It must have been kind and gentle.  Did a sympathetic tear flow from His eye? Oh what a compassionate being our Savior is.

            2. Conversely, there are times that our Savior showed anger.  He cleansed the temple more than once.  In Mark 3:1-5 he became angry over the coldness of men toward a man in need of healing.  In Matthew 23:13-17 he pronounced “woes” upon the scribes and Pharisees who were making a pretense of religion.  I’ve received “the look” from teachers, my parents, and my loving wife; and rightfully so.  But what does the face of anger look like on Jesus?  I hope I never have to find out.

            3. One face I do want to see is the Lord’s face of approval.  What did Peter see in the face of Jesus as He blessed him for his statement of faith in Matthew 16:16, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”?  Did Jesus show His delight that someone was catching on to the truth?  Does not our Master’s face beam with joy each time we make decisions, live our lives and make statements showing our faith in Him as the Messiah?  We seek the approval of the significant others in our lives.  Certainly we want to see the face of approval from our Lord.

            4. Then again, there is the face of disappointment.  In John 6 Jesus was sharing some difficult teachings on the matter of discipleship.  As a result many who had been following Him “went back and walked with Him no more” (vs. 66).  Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”  You can almost see the disappointment on His face as He asked the question.  Peter replied well when he answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.”  (vs. 67)  But then Peter himself experienced the look of disappointment on Jesus’ face when the Lord turned and looked at him right after his third denial of Jesus (Luke 22:60-62).  There’s a face I never want to see.

Well, my space has run out, but let’s not close this until we have noticed one final face – the face of love.  This is the one none of us wants to miss.  The face of love.  John talks a lot about the love of Jesus.  Read John 3:16, 13:15 and I John 4:7-11.  At the cross the face of Jesus must have demonstrated a variety of emotions.  Overshadowing them all was His face of love.  John says that someday we will see Jesus “as He is”.  I can’t help but think that the first thing any of us will notice will be His face of Love.

Who’s Your “Barnabas”?       As a follow-up to comments made during a lesson last month, we want to have members of the Northwest family share with us the names of individuals who have been and encouragement to them in any way. Who is your “Barnabas”? Who has lifted you up in times of need, encouraged you when it was most beneficial to you, helped you through the circumstances of life? This may have been done by a well-timed note, or by some words of support and an attitude of caring, or in many other ways greater and smaller. Use the form provided in the foyer, and let us know whom you appreciate for their love and concern, and for their efforts to encourage you as Barnabas encouraged brethren in the early church. Fill out the form and give it to Theada Shepler, or simply place it in her office mailbox. We will start to highlight these “Barnabases” on the back of the pew sheet soon. One last note. For the time being, we’ll exclude the ministered staff, and focus on the other members of the congregation who are deserving of recognition.

*Christian*
Many, Many years ago, A man of little fame,
Died upon a cruel cross, So I might wear His name.

He gave me the greatest gift of all, His life upon that tree,
And all he asks that I return, Is one hundred per cent of me.

You say, “This isn’t really fair, How can I give my all?”
It really isn’t hard, you see, When you hear the Apostle Paul.

It isn’t I who does it, It’s Christ who lives in me,
So all I’m really doing, Is giving what’s given me.

And if at times it seems too tough, To keep up with the race,
I simply have to close my eyes, And think of my heavenly place.

For you see, Christ hasn’t left me, To do it all alone,
He’s there to watch and guide men, From the right side of the throne.
