Lance’s Lines

Let me extend a welcome to everyone as we assemble to worship our great God and to study from His word on this first day of a new week. If you are visiting with the Northwest family today, we especially greet you and want you to know how very glad we are that you’ve chosen to come and fellowship with the Lord’s body at this place.

Just over eighteen months ago, we began to use a unified curriculum for all of our Sunday morning Bible classes, from the toddlers through adults. This is a very basic series of lessons, drawn from the Bible itself, and covering both the Old and New Testaments.
Those responsible for overseeing the Bible school curriculum, under the direction of the Northwest eldership, have determined that, for our senior-high age and adult Bible classes, we will seek more variety in the Sunday morning curriculum, as we do on Wednesday evenings. As a result of that decision, Earl Ash will be presenting lessons on the topic “Developing A Christ-Like Character” (the eight graces of II Peter 1: 5-7). Bill Craddock is now engaged in a study on the vital subject of “forgiveness.” These are timely lessons, always, and as Christians, we need to understand what the Bible says on this subject, for our own well being and for the relationships we have with others and with our Father in heaven.
Today, my auditorium class will begin a look at the gospel of John in a comprehensive study of one of the greatest treatises on the divinity of Christ, “…the Word [became] flesh…” (John 1: 14). John’s gospel differs from those of Matthew, Mark, and Luke in that it presents many incidents from Jesus’ earthly life and ministry that are not found in those three “synoptic” gospels. Probably written much later than the other three, John’s record takes a close look at the relationship between the Father and the Son, and between Jesus and His closest disciples, the twelve men called to be apostles.
Remember, too, the ladies’ class continues to meet at the south (kitchen) end of the multi-purpose room each Sunday morning.
If you’ve not been attending Bible class on Sunday, here is a wonderful opportunity to do so either at the start of, or very early in, these studies from the scriptures. That investment of time pays great dividends in spiritual growth.

Continue to register for this year’s Christian Training School. If you already signed up for a class, thank you for your support of this effort. If you haven’t yet registered, please do so as soon as possible. The pre-registration deadline is Sunday, February 7th. With this bulletin issue you are provided a brochure listing all the classes and instructors for the 2010 school. Look it over and make your selection, then you are ready for the start of the school on Monday, February 15th.

Have a great day, and week.
God bless.

IF YOU SHOULD DIE

If you should die this afternoon, what would you take with you?
That farm on which you’ve toiled for years? A sack of money, too?
If you should die this afternoon, then would you take your car?
And would you take your stocks and bonds, you wisely bought at par?
No! Should you die this afternoon, (It’s not too soon for plans)
Tomorrow every cent you own would be another man’s.

If you should die this afternoon, (and any day you could)
Each stick and stone and dime you own would all be gone for good.
But did you give a quarter to some beggar you saw weep?
How strange to learn beyond this life that this is what you keep!

Those missionary funds you give to spread the Word afar
Are banked for you in God’s account, but not your house or car.

Those dollars given to your church are all you really save,
For only money placed with God shows up beyond the grave.

So should you die this afternoon, are your investments wrong?
Or have you planned on what you’ll lose and what you’ll take along?
