NORTHWEST LIFE LINES

Craddock’s Corner

Welcome to 2010!   We are happy that you are here to worship the Lord our God on this first Lord’s Day of the New Year.  Each year we wonder what the coming year holds for us.  If we are faithful to the Lord, the year will be a great success.  2010 holds great possibilities for the NW church of Christ.  Our aim is to take the gospel to as many in this area as possible and plans have been made and are being put into action to accomplish this.  Each member must be ready to use their individual abilities to help accomplish God’s purpose this year.
We should not approach the New Year with a sense of fear.  Fear as used in the English language has two principle meanings:  (1) The apprehension of evil that normally leads one either to flee or to fight.  (2) The awe and reverence that a man of sense feels in the presence of God, and to a less extent in the presence of a king or other dread authority.
A child feels the first type of fear when he/she is in the presence of a cruel parent.  We experience this fear when in a situation that would cause us harm.  This type of fear will cause us to take the necessary steps to insure our safety.  It becomes evident in the days immediately following such an event as hurricane Wilma, which we experienced while in Florida, when people did not make proper preparations with supplies.  The next day many were in need of basic supplies that they should have gotten before the storm.  God gave us this type of fear that we might protect ourselves.
A child stands before a kind and loving parent with the second kind of fear.  He/she will obey their parents because of the love and respect they have for them.  They know they are safe and secure with their parents.  This is the fear a Christian has in his/her relationship with God.
There are fifteen (15) Hebrew nouns that are rendered “fear” in the King James Version.  In the New Testament, the Greek “phobos” is used in both senses.  “But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said ‘it is a ghost!’ and they cried out in fear” (Matthew 14:26).  “There is no fear of God before their eyes” (Romans 3:18).  The word “reverend” is found only in Psalm 111:9 and means literally “to be feared” and is used only for God.
The person who is not saved should certainly stand with apprehension, not of evil, but of the almighty God.  “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.  Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others” (2 Cor. 5:10-11a). (ESV)  The Hebrew writer in 10:26-31 explains that it is a “fearful” thing to fall into the hands of the “living God.”  He explains this is for those who deliberately sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth (v. 26).  These know God and his commands yet live a sinful life.  He ends this warning with, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (v. 31).  Of course those who have never come to the Lord for forgiveness of their sins should stand in fear of him.  If there is no fear of God, there will be no obedience to God’s commands.
The saved stand in fear of God in that they stand in “awe” of his majesty and power.  Their fear is that of respect and love, not of terror.  “By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.  There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.  For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love” (1 John 4:17-18).  The saved do not stand in fear of the judgment.  Through Christ the saved stand justified before God.  There will be no sin brought before God in their lives as the blood of Christ removes sin every day.
In 2010, let us “stand in awe” of God.  “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).  With God on our side we are the victors.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

In John 6, was Jesus talking about the Lord’s Supper, or was He preaching about himself as Savior?
He was really preaching that He was the bread (food) of life.  The chapter begins with Jesus taking five barley loaves and two small fish and feeding more than five thousand people.  Jesus then walked on the sea, and on the following day He was in Capernaum.  The people came seeking Him (v. 24). Jesus knew what was in their hearts and said plainly, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.  Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal” (vs. 26, 27).  Jesus then declared that He is the bread out of heaven, the bread of God, and the bread of life (vs. 32, 33, 48).  He said, “The bread also which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh” (v. 51).  He gave His flesh (body) and His blood on the cross. Keeping the same illustrations of food, Jesus continued, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves” (v. 53).
Just as literal food is necessary for physical life, so Jesus’ death on the cross and the shedding of His blood were necessary for our spiritual life.  We eat His flesh and drink His blood by accepting His death on the cross and the giving of His blood for our salvation.  Jesus said clearly that to accept Him we must accept His words.  “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life” (v. 63b).  The Lord’s Supper is to be eaten in memory of Jesus’ body, His blood and His return (1 Cor. 11:23-26).
