NORTHWEST LIFE LINES

Greetings, and welcome, everyone, to the worship assemblies and Bible study of the Northwest church on this first Sunday, and first day of November. If you took advantage of the adjustment back to standard time, you should be well rested as this day, and week begins. I don’t really care for the early darkness this season brings, but am consoled by the fact that we move the clocks ahead one hour to daylight savings time, on March 14th in 2010.
By that date, one of the major events of early – 2010 will be just about concluded. Planning has already begun for next year’s Christian Training School, which will begin on Monday, February 15th and continue for four more Monday evenings, until the 15th of March. Confirmation of classes and instructors is going on now and by next Sunday, November 8th, is to be finished. The school board has developed another outstanding list of classes, with knowledgeable and competent teachers to lead them. As always, the board’s desire is that many people from Stark and surrounding counties will take advantage of the fellowship and learning opportunities the Christian Training School provides. Pre-registration for classes will begin on Sunday, January 10th, 2010.
Also, by mid – March of 2010, we will be near the start of another event, the Stark County Youth Meeting. March 26th and 27th are set as the dates for this event. Keith Kull will continue in his role of director of the rally and the Northwest elders will oversee it. While the numbers of the young people and adults participating in the Youth Meeting have declined some in recent years, it remains one of the oldest and best youth rallies in this part of the United States. It is so good that our area youth don’t have to travel far to participate in such an event each year. Like the Christian Training School, planning has already begun for next year’s meeting. Much help will be needed so that the high level of this meeting can be maintained. Northwest, and other area churches, will provide that help, and you can have a part in this congregation’s participation.
These events for early 2010 noted, let’s not forget that there are still two months remaining in 2009. The work of the church goes on all year long, from day one to day 365 or 66. Right now we can be inviting others to join the Northwest family for worship and Bible study. Right now we need to be teaching others the good news of the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ. October was a great month at Northwest, a wonderful start for the new congregation. Let’s build on that start and finish the year 2009 on a positive note, even as we get ready for 2010.
To those visiting today, we offer a special word of welcome. It’s great to have everyone present to worship our powerful, yet merciful, God and to study from His word.
Have a great day, and week, and God Bless.

                                                                                             Lance

*QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK*

Isn’t everything that a Christian does worship?
NO!  Some people reason, “Since everything we do is worship, we can bring into worship anything we do.  We play musical instruments outside the Christian assemblies, so they must be alright in the assembly.”  The Greek verb for “worship” (proskuneo), means “to fall down in reverence before” and ”express reverence toward.”  Literally, it means “to kiss toward in reverential respect for another.”  This action takes place at specific times, with beginning and ending points.  In the Bible we see that people often went to certain places to worship and that they began and ended their worship at specific points in time:

  • Jews and Greeks went to the feast in order to worship (John 12:20).
  • The Ethiopian eunuch traveled many miles to worship at Jerusalem (Acts 8:27).
  • Paul ended his 3rd missionary journey by traveling to Jerusalem to worship (Acts 24:11).
  • People impressed by miraculous speaking of languages which they had not studied, might fall down to worship (1 Cor. 14:24, 25).
  • The Book of Revelation shows that worship began at certain times (4:10; 11:1; 14:7; 15:4; 19:10; 22:8,9).

Another Greek word meaning “service” (latrueo; Romans 12:1) is sometimes translated “worship.”  This word encompasses all of our service to God, including worship.  We must serve God at all times, but we are not expected to worship Him every minute of the day.  Instead, we leave our “service” to go to “worship.”
Sitting at Jacob’s well, Jesus talked with a Samaritan woman about the place of worship.  The Jews knew to worship at Jerusalem, the city God had chosen (1 Kings 11:13) and to refrain from introducing anything into worship that God did not include.
As justification for instrumental music, this thinking is inherently flawed, for not everything we do is worship. –Owen Olbricht
Doesn’t God want us to use our talents to glorify Him?
Yes, but to assert that God expects us to use our individual talents in worship would open the door to a wide range of activities.  Jesus taught that worship of God must be in spirit and truth (John 4:24).  He did not teach that each person is to include in worship whatever talent he/she has.  Worship must be according to the will of God, not according to talents we have.
If we were to display our talents in the worship services, we could not restrict the demonstration to music.  Christian talents include art, cooking, dancing, and athletic prowess to name a few.  If all Christians performed before the congregation so that God could be praised with their talents, there would be no limit to what could be practiced in the worship assembly.
We are to use our talents to honor God when we do all we do in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Your talents then honor God.  We are servants of God 24/7, we worship God at times privately and at times with the assembly.  These times of worship are very special to the Christian.  They build us up for our continual service.
