NORTHWEST LIFE LINES
KEITH’S KULL
ANGEL FOOD MINISTRIES
Frank, (not his real name) is a senior adult living on a modest pension in one of the senior housing complexes in our community. Joan, (not her real name) is a young single mother of three trying to feed her family on whatever she can make from doing odd jobs and the on-again/off-again child support she receives from her former husband. Harvey, (not his real name) makes $9.00 an hour on his job with very poor benefits and as Carol, (not her real name) his wife, takes care of their two infant children. These people are real and they all have the same problem: How can they care for their family and themselves and maintain their dignity. These people go to the grocery store week after week and bring home less and less as they spend the same amount of money – a truth for all of us.
Question how can we help these people? They don’t really want hand outs yet there is no doubt they need help. Why not offer them a “hand up” rather than a hand out. Our “Angel Food Ministry” is the perfect program for these people. As a matter of fact the people I mentioned above all benefit from the Angel Food Ministry here at Northwest.
Angel Food Ministry is dedicated to providing grocery relief to those who need it. Everyone is eligible since there are no income guidelines. Each month the ministry offers 7-8 menu selections that are nutritionally balanced and affordably priced. The whole purpose is to help people stretch their food dollars.
Angel Food Ministry is also a ministry that promotes relationships and evangelism. During the past two years we have come to know those who participate in the program through the ordering and distribution process. Each month those who place an order receive a copy of the House to House/Heart to Heart magazine when they pick up their order. Christianity is a taught religion and this publication teaches truth in a very attractive and practical way.
As I mentioned, anyone can participate in this program. Brochures are available in the foyer, simply read through it and see if this is something you would like to try. Or, perhaps you would like to place an order for someone you know and would like to help. Ordering can be done at the times listed in the brochure or online. During this month there is a Thanksgiving Holiday Box available that will provide a good meal for a family of four.
Distribution of the food takes place on the third Saturday of each month except in November and December when it is distributed on the second Saturday. We can use additional help at the distributions. If you are interested please contact Donna Gessel, Marilyn Hopkins or myself. Distribution this month is on Saturday, November 14. Workers need to be here from 9:30 – 11:30 AM. Come and give us a hand, it’s really an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Thank You: Dear Church Family, Now that I have finally shed all the casts on my right hand, I can write to thank all who sent me cards, called on the phone, sent me e-mails and just prayed for my recovery. A special thanks to Donna and Georgia, who visited me and brought those delicious cookies. To know that there are so many fellow Christians wishing my return to health is a real comfort. I am so thankful for my Christian family. In Christian love, Betty Grewell
Note: A special collection will be taken on Sunday, November 8th to help support our Christian Assistance Fund. Please pray about this as you consider giving generously.

Reminder: Be sure to check the east-wing bulletin board for upcoming events.
“Trunk and Treat”: Our annual “Trunk and Treat” will be held TODAY following evening services. Those folks participating in passing out treats are asked to park their cars with the trunks facing the aisles in the parking lot, toward the west end of the building. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately – nothing scary or otherwise offensive. Please plan to stay and join us!
Immediately following “Trunk and Treat” we will have our monthly Birthday Fellowship. Please bring finger foods, a 2 liter bottle of pop and plan to stay.
Time Change: Please remember to set your clocks back 1 hour on Saturday evening, October 31st for daylight savings time.
Note: A washer and dryer have been made available to the church to give to someone who has the need for one. If you need a washer and/or dryer please contact the church office.

Ladies: All ladies are invited to the next “Night Out” on Monday, November 9th. This will be the annual “Trash and Treasure” evening. Those attending are asked to bring something from their house that can be given away. Your “Trash” can become someone else’s “Treasure.” In turn, you can find an item (or items) you might want from what others bring. It’s an evening of fellowship and fun, a mini – “garage sale” without the need to exchange money for goods. Come and enjoy the time together with other ladies.

Holiday Goodie order sheets are on the east wing bulletin board. Sign up for what you would like to have. The order sheets will be taken down on November 23rd. All orders can be picked up on December 10th at the Stepping Stone meeting and on November 29th in the library or kitchen. Please see Juanita Jacobs for more information.

*QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK*
What did the preacher mean when he said, “I want to urge you to become a Christian, not just because you may die, but because you may live?”
When studying with folks, we often encourage them to become a child of God because we do not know when life will end. James said that life is like a vapor that appears for a short time and then vanishes away (James 4:14). Most every preacher or personal worker knows of someone who waited too long and died out of Christ. It is sound and scriptural to encourage others to become Christians “because they may die before they expect to.”
However, there is a deeper meaning to salvation. It is more than just something that happens in the afterlife. Jesus came to save us from Satan and hell, but he also came to give us abundant life, not just for later but also for the present (John 10:10).
To hear his words and do them and to follow his example is to live a rich full life. When we hear and do the will of the Lord, great blessings follow, even in this life.
Christians are to live “serving” lives. Great joy and happiness can be found in the life of a servant. All of us are seeking happiness, satisfaction, positive self-image, and a good reputation. All these can be found while living a life of service in the Lord.
Christians live a “loving, forgiving” life. Some of the most unhappy people are those driven by bitterness over past slights, whether real or supposed. Dropping grudges and showing a forgiving spirit even to those who have wronged us is a refreshing delightful way to live. It is good to become a Christian now, because you may live.
Christians live virtuous, guilt-free lives when they follow the Lord. A Christian girl turned down several requests for dates from a young man who was not a Christian. After she said “no” again, this time to attend a rock concert with him, in a kind of mock exasperation he asked her, “You don’t dance, you don’t drink, you don’t attend rock concerts; what do you do for fun?” She said, “For fun I get up in the morning without feeling embarrassed, ashamed and guilt about what I did the night before.”
It is fun to be in a Christian marriage, a husband and wife confident in their love and fidelity to one another. It is fun to rear children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, knowing the children will never have to see their parents in a drunken quarrel or a drug-induced stupor.
A life of obedience to Christ is a happy, guilt-free, fear-free life. It is good to become a Christian now, because you may live.
Certainly there is a cost to be counted in becoming a Christian, but it is the way of a transgressor that is declared to be hard (Prov. 13:15). For joy inexpressible (1 Pet. 1:8) and peace that surpasses understanding (Phil. 4:7) live whatever years you may have left whether many or few, in service to Christ. That is why it is said, “Become a Christian or rededicate yourself to Christ now, because you may live.” It is the way to live.
Bill Craddock
