LIFE LINES
KEITH’S KULL
THE MARKET AVENUE CHURCH OF CHRIST
On July 16, 1939, 17 Christians who had been meeting in various locations in Canton and southern Stark County came together in a vacant store building at 2100 Mahoning Road NE. Thus began what we now know as the Market Avenue church of Christ. Through the years the congregation has been housed at various locations in the northeast and northwest sections of the city including: 10th Street NE, Walnut Avenue NE and, for the last 43 and ½ years (to the day), at its present location on Market Avenue N. In the mid 70’s an upstairs addition was added to the original facility.
Through the years 18 men have served as elders of the congregation and 39 have served as deacons. The congregation has been served by 12 preachers, two associate ministers and two summer interns. In addition Floyd Stocker and Walter Young served as interim preachers for the congregation at various times, and when needed.
The members of Market Avenue have always been devoted to serving our Father, His people and the Stark County community. Our thirst for knowledge, growth and service have led to such ministries as: A deaf ministry, which began in 1964 with Wilson Braden as preacher and teacher; cooperative efforts such as the Christian Training School and the Annual Stark County Youth Meeting, which began in 1968 under the oversight of the Market Avenue elders and continues as such to this day; and participation in two area wide campaigns. For nine years the congregation conducted an aggressive bus ministry which resulted in bringing over 200 people to our weekly services at its height. The congregation has had an active senior’s ministry since 1974 and was the home of Stark County Christian Academy from 1975 to June of this year (2009). In addition Market has been active in mission work in Beirut, Lebanon, Grenoble & Lyon, France, Nicaragua and other Latin America Countries. State side mission points have included Vales Gate, NY and Madison, South Dakota.
Ministries such as Teen Night Out, Angel Food Ministries, Bears of Love and One Night for the Master, our annual Hat and Glove Giveaway, and the Tray Favor ministry have been parts of our effort to reach out to the Canton and Stark County community.
We have now come to a new period in our history in which we will merge with our sister congregation – 38th Street – to form a new congregation: The Northwest church of Christ. Such a merger does not mean an end to the history of these two congregations it merely opens a new chapter. We must never forget the sacrifice and labor of those who have brought both congregations to this point in time; rather we must honor their memory by working together to accomplish God’s purposes here in Canton. It can no longer be “them” and “they”; it is now “us” and “we”. By worshiping, planning and working together we can accomplish more together than we have separately.
Thank you for joining together with us as we remember our past and look forward to our future.

When I Say, “I am a Christian”
When I say..."I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I am saved"
I'm whispering "I was lost"
That is why I chose this way.
When I say..."I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
And need someone to be my guide.
When I say..."I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
And pray for strength to carry on.
When I say..."I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed
And cannot ever pay the debt.
When I say..."I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are all too visible,
But God believes I'm worth it.
When I say..."I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain
I have my share of heartaches
Which is why I speak His name.
When I say..."I am a Christian"
I do not wish to judge.
I have no authority.
I only know I'm loved.
Carol S. Wimmer
